Hand Crafted Folding Syrian Game Table
[SG1-2-1]
$2,990.00

Game table, hand crafted and inlaid with quality peach, olive, rose and lemon wood in a mosaic pattern. This is the famous middle eastern game table, designed for chess, checkers, backgammon, and playing cards. The unique design makes changing the setup a snap! When you are not playing, store cards, etc. inside, and fold it to save space. It measures 32" H and 28" wide. (For matching chairs, please see item SC1-7-1).

Today, in Damascus, Syrian craftsmen continue with the traditions of their illustrious ancestors. In spite of modern industry, which has destroyed much of the world's handicrafts, Syrian artisans have, to a great extent, held the machine at bay. Their expertise, developed through the ages, has given them the edge in creating such artful pieces. The products they churn out are as popular today as when the Phoenicians of Ugarit carried their handmade merchandise to the edges of the then known world.

The art of Mosaic wood crafting requires great discipline and gift. It starts by assembling small pieces of different kinds of wood, such as peach, lemon, olive, rose and walnut. The pieces are hand shaped and oriented in geometric patterns. Thin slices are then cut to fit the specific design and laid on the wood frame and glued carefully. Pre-cut Mother of pearl shell pieces are inserted in some designs to add elegance and taste. Polishing and varnishing follows, as well as lining with colored velvet depending on the design.

Many surrounding countries like Egypt, Turkey, and Lebanon have tried to imitate the process with little success. Syrians were the inventors and then the masters of the art of wood inlay. Hence, there is a huge difference in craftsmanship and quality of materials used.
